Welcome to The Learning Hive, Room 12, term 1 2012.
I hope that you have all had a good holiday. I am Fiona Robertson and I will be your child’s class teacher for 2012. This is an exciting year for us as learners, as Room 12 is one of the 3 digital classes at Carlton School. What does this mean? Each child has one computer assigned to them and we will be using the computers to support our, reading, writing and maths programs. As well as using them for art and inquiry.
¨ Our swimming days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 1:40- 2: P.E. focus for the term.
¨  We go to the school library on Monday afternoon where each child has a book issued. Library books will go home on a Monday and are to be returned to school once you have read them with your child.
¨  At 9am each morning the junior school are having a 15 minute fitness session.
¨ On Monday mornings at 11:30 the junior school will be going to visit places in our community. The idea of this is to give students new experiences and to talk, about and a basis for further learning in our classrooms.
¨ Each week your child will be given homework. Homework will be home reading,  and sometimes spelling and maths as well as other tasks relevant to classroom learning. Often these tasks will be placed on the class blog. Homework should take approximately 20 minutes each night.
¨ Room 12 has a class mascot ‘Piata’ the pukeho. Throughout the year Piata will have the opportunity to go home each night with a child from Room 12. When your child brings home they have to write in his journey to show what they have done with Piata. He will also be travelling overseas this year to  visit other schools.
¨ Room 12 has a class blog where we show what we have been doing in class. It also has links to stories online, math games, literacy activities that we use in class. It also has a calendar of up and coming events in the class and school wide ones as well. There is also a page where class and school notes will be placed. It would be great if you would become a follower and post comments about our learning as feedback is valued by the children. View our blog at www.thehiveoflearning.blogspot.com
¨ If you do not have access to a computer at home you are welcome to come in and view the class blog on one of the class computers before school.
¨ Please can you return the following form to indicate what days you would be available to help with class trips and if you have the internet at home
¨ Room 12’s door is always open if you wish to visit. If you have any concerns about your child please come and discuss them with me.
I look forward to meeting you and working with your child this year.
